Fall 2021
Area Charts and Horizon Charts

Area Chart:

Using RAWgraphs V.1 and the sample data set Music Industry data I made this series of area charts showing each media grouped by row, with the date in years mapped on the x-axes.

The size of each area chart represents its market share value, mapped on each row by using the same scale for all the series. This enables the viewer to compare relatively the market values of each media over time.

The values are not centered vertically to give a clear cut on the bottom of each media row, defining a clear beginning for the scale at value 0.

The media groups are also sorted in their rows by descending Total value, so that the media with the highest total market values can be found on the most bottom and the media with the lowest total market value can be found on top.

Horizon Chart:

This series of horizon charts shows the same data in the same layout as the series of area charts. Each row has 3 bands horizon chart. The color is a gradient of a similar green as it is easy to differentiate the darker tones from the lighter ones while contrasting from the white background and grey year lines.

From Area Chart to Horizon Chart:

I used Photoshop to make a Horizon Chart from an Area Chart in order to understand how Horizon Charts work and are built.
